Organizing a trip to Scandinavia (part 1)

If you start planning your spring, summer and even autumn holidays, read my blog rubric - "Recommendations for tourists." The first topic of it is “Organizing a trip to Scandinavia”.

What information should be found on the Internet before you go on your trip to Scandinavia:

  • Fragments of maps of different parts of your route on a larger scale + 2-3 detailed travel guides.

Photo: http://www.openstreetmap.org/OpenStreetMap contributors, Wikimedia Commons, Licence CC 2.0

  • Travellers’ reviews (many of them comprise a lot of useful practical tips).
  • Transport means by which you will be traveling - ticket prices, timetables. See this example of table I’ve made for myself:
Departure time-Arrival time
Transport mean
Cost for 1 person
Cost for 3 persons
22:50-13:00 (Moscow time)
Train "Leo Tolstoy"

101,6 EUR
304,8 EUR

Another question is taking taxi. I recommend you to write/remember the names of several official taxi companies (if you don’t want to overpay for services of questionable private taxi drivers). For example, in Stockholm, you can use the services of Taxi Stockholm or Taxi Kurir.

  • Restaurants and cafes – accroding to the price range and your culinary preferences. Also it’s useful to search for some details about tipping rules in different countries of Scandinavia.

  • Shopping - addresses of shops, days and hours of their opening, information about Tax Free, discounts, sales.
  • Estimated weather forecast during your trip. It’s better to gather data from several meteorological sites for best accuracy.
  • Periods of "high season".
  • Phrasebooks in English and local languages. To know some words/phrases from them is always useful!
  • If you plan to visit the capitals/big cities, learn more about the cards, like Stockholm Card, Helsinki Card, Oslo Pass, etc. By purchasing them for a certain number of days, you can have free access to museums, some excursions, use public transport.
  • Vitally important information - phone numbers and addresses of emergencies (police, ambulance, fire), your country embassies in the Nordic countries, hospitals, lost and found. Also - tourist centers, transport information desks. Currency exchange, monetary units, the time difference compared with time in your country. Customs. Holidays and weekends. Telephone codes, mobile and local phones, Internet cafes.
